Northern Michigan Has Strong Presence at West Michigan Policy Forum

Northern Michigan was well represented at the 2014 West Michigan Policy Forum held in Grand Rapids on September 29, 2014, as presidents and members of the Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance came down in force to be heard at the bi-annual business policy setting conference.

The Alliance was represented by members and officials of the Alpena Area Chamber, Cadillac Area Chamber, Lake Superior Community Partnership in Marquette, Traverse City Area Chamber, and the Petoskey Area Chamber.

The major topics discussed at the Policy Forum included:

  • New revenues for funding state transportation networks
  • Michigan legislative term limits
  • Expansion of College Credits for work experience
  • Requirement for funding of state economic development and workforce agencies to align more closely with private sector efforts in talent development initiatives

The West Michigan Policy Forum has been very successful in the past with having its topics and policy agenda turned into state law. Recent examples include the changes to the Personal Property Tax system, elimination of the SBT, funding for Early Childhood education, and Right to Work.
